Individual Education Plan (IEP)

An Individual Education Plan provides a framework that builds on your child’s strengths to support their learning needs. It also serves as a record of their progress.

A case manager coordinates the development and implementation of the IEP in collaboration with the child (when possible), classroom teacher, parents/guardians, other school staff and additional educational partners as required.

IEP meetings are typically held once each year with the purpose of updating the goals. You can also expect an update once or twice during the school year, typically coinciding with the school’s regular reporting periods.

Supported by the Ministry of Education, a new emerging format for IEPS called Competency Based IEPs (CBIEP) is being implemented in the Greater Victoria School District.  This format will encourage students to be active participants in their development. At the heart of the CBIEP is the development of student agency and self regulated learning.

More information regarding Competency-Based Individual Education Plans can be found on page 12 of  the Ministry of Special Education Manual /Special Education Services: A Manual of Policies, Procedures and Guidelines

Access RDSP Project: Their mission is to connect children (ages 19 and under) on Vancouver Island with the Disability Tax Credit and Registered Disability Savings Accounts. When a child with disabilities opens an RDSP, they can be eligible for thousands in government grants and bonds to save for their future.  As a project funded by Island Health, they are able to offer free 1-on-1 support to families who want help. Not only do they provide all the background information on eligibility for both the DTC and RDSP, they help with filling in forms and guiding families through the process from start to finish.
