Throughout their K-12 journey students will transition a number of times. This includes starting school, moving from class to class, from grade to grade, changing schools or school districts, and from high school to post-secondary, community, or work situations.
For children with diverse needs transitions can be more challenging. Thoughtful planning focused on an understanding of the individual child is the key to creating a smooth transition.
As a parent/guardian you know your child the best and are generally the one constant as your child moves from one setting to the next. You bring an awareness of the areas where your child may need more support during a transition.
Following are a number of questions you could ask to help inform transition planning:
- What kinds of strategies will be used to help my child with their learning needs?
- How will my child’s progress be measured?
- Will my child follow the regular grade curriculum?
- What plans do we need to make for future placements?
- How can I make sure that teachers are aware of my child’s individual learning goals and dreams for the future?
